Today is July 1st and there are thousands of new doctors all across the country that feel like they have the weight of the world on their shoulders. Trust me, I was there too and every single physician has been in your shoes. So I'm going to impart on you a few words of wisdom that we've all learned along the way.
Here are just a few things that I wish someone told me when I was in your shoes. One is that you don't need to know everything, but you do need to care deeply. Care deeply for your patients, care deeply for your colleagues, and most importantly, care deeply for yourself. Number two is introduce yourself.
Look people in the eye. Your presence matters more than your words. Number three is ask for help. Every great doctor does. Four, you will make a mistake. Own it, learn from it, and move on. Five, the way you treat nurses, techs, and janitors will define you more than any of your credentials. Be a good human.
Stay curious. Stay humble. Be kind and remember why you went into medicine. You got this.
