50 people sign up for your app. Database locks up. API queues back up. Blank screen of death. Here's how you survive your first 100 users without having to rewrite your entire app. Step 1. Connection Pooling on your database. Right now every request opens a new connection. 50 requests, 50 connections. Your database has a limit.
You hit it, the app dies. Not cool. So connection pooling reuses connections. 50 requests share 10 connections. Supabase has this built in. If you're self-hosting, use pgbouncer. One config change, immediate relief for everything. Step two, add a caching layer. If the same data gets requested 100 times, don't hit the database 100 times.
Redis, upstash, even in memory cache, you can do it. Cache anything that doesn't change every second. Your API response goes from 800 milliseconds to 50 milliseconds, and your database load drops 80%. Step 3. Load test before you launch. K6, artillery, both free, 30 minutes to set up. You can simulate 100 users hitting your app at once.
Find the bottleneck before your users find it. If it breaks in the test, fix it quietly. But if it breaks in production, you lose customers loudly. So tell me, how many users did it take to crash your app? Drop the number below, I want to know.
