Welcome to The Devil's Advocate, where I defend an unpopular philosophical opinion for you to prove me wrong. This week's take, Stoicism is not a good life philosophy. Stoicism teaches that to live well, we should control our emotions, accept reality, and cultivate self-sufficiency. While there's value in these teachings, Stoicism risks removing not just the pain, but also the meaning and depth of being alive.
When we detach, we lose the rich signals that emotions give us. Anger urges us to fight injustice, grief reminds us what is important, and joy tells us what is good. When we accept reality as it is, we risk an action and not challenging the status quo. And when we seek self-sufficiency to an extreme, we forget that humans are highly interconnected and interdependent.
In my opinion, much of what makes life worth living, such as art, beauty, and love, is rooted in emotion, vulnerability, and defiance. All that is to say, the devil might have a point. But what do you think? Is stoicism a good or bad life philosophy?
