This marketing technique manipulates you every day. Imagine a Coke machine in your business or on your campus, assuming it sells 100 cans a day. Now, if we put a Pepsi machine right next to it, how many cans do you think each machine will sell? Now you'll probably see 50 to 50 or 60 to 40.

Well, no. Chances are it's going to be 200 cans each. But why? Because when there is only one machine, the question you ask yourself is, am I going to drink a Coke or not? But when there are two machines, the question becomes, do I want a Coke or Pepsi? It's counterintuitive, but having competing stores next to each other can sometimes increase sales of each.
