It's not magic, it's neuroscience. We can actually perform brain surgery on patients using sand waves. This means no more cutting through the skin, no more drilling through the bone. Sound too good to be true? Follow me in the day in the life of a neurosurgeon, Focus, ultrasound edition. This is the frame that I put on the patient's head so that when targeting a region in the brain called the thalamus,
it's done with pinpoint accuracy. Today we treat... treat. Once I have the frame on the patient, I take them with me and the transport team to the second site. Here we have a special MRI scanner attached to the focused ultrasound machine. This MRI scan lets us look at the brain in great detail and helps us with the targeting.
What focused ultrasound thalamotomy is, is a bit like shining the sunlight through a magnifying glass and concentrating those beams to burn a hole in the brain. Except for light, we use sand waves. Why are we burning a hole? This is because we have abnormal tremor cells that are firing and leading to too much movement. That little white blob you see on the right of the screen is what
